evaluation

this project has helped me understand the steps to take for designing things.
i have found that research is the most important part of idea development as some things may not look or work the way you first imagined them to.
over all i am unfortunately not happy with all of my finished textures though i do like a couple of them
if i had more time to develop them i would go back and try to collect my own photos of the textures that i want to create so i could then merge both my drawn textures with the photo texture to hopefully end up with a better end product

finished textures

brick wall texture

i wanted to go for a more cartoon
like style for my textures so
i chose the second picture from my previous wall texture draft and added more shading and tilled it more and ended up with this texture

i like the finished product of this. though if i had more time then i would have changed some of the shading in the centre of the texture as when i tilled it it doesnt like quite right.

                                                                             wood

this is a cartoon style of my wood texture
i used one of my older wood textures and used a filter in Photoshop to make it look more blocky and "fake"

if i were to make this texture again i would have drawn it in staid of using filters as it didn't quite give me the look i wanted

floor texture

for this texture i have used my old floor texture and put a couple overlay layers on top to give the checked style i wanted

texture designing

texture research

the first thing to do when thinking of creating textures is research. there are a couple different methods of research that I did. the first method i did was to take photos. as i didn't have a set texture i wanted to create. i took photos of any textures i found interesting.

photos

the following photos are a couple of the photos that i preferred over the rest.

i preferred theses textures more over the rest because they seamed more interesting then the others i had collected. i had many of the same textures but these stood out the most.

Internet pictures

after collecting my own pictures i also wanted to get pictures from the Internet as there will probably be textures that i couldn't get myself.
because of the environment around me i am unable to get certain texture for example sand or snow

all the images that i had collected both by camera and by internet was used to give me some insperation on different textures i could create. after thinking of the different textures i could make i started to think about were the textures would be from. as it would be strange if the textures weren't similar to each other

statement of intent

for my street i want to create a creepy yet fun type setting.
i am fond of using the circus for horror type things so i decided to use it here.
i want my street to look wonderland-esc
but have a dark horror aspect

street research

i started to research the type of street i want my textures to come from. i have always been fascinated by the circus and the Victorian age, so i decided i wanted to combine the two. i wanted to give it a vintage look but also make it colourful and creep/crazy so i started to research into a couple things that had similar aspects to what i wanted to do.

games

i started to research games to see how they fit in their textures and link it to the rest of the other textures.
there aren't many games that have the same sort of architecture as i wanted but there were some that had a creepy/crazy feel to it for example there is

Alice madness returns

this game is based in a alternative psychotic version of Alice in wonderland. in this game there is a London but the majority of the game play is in wonderland. unfortunately this game does not have a mixture of London and wonderland together, i still take inspiration on how the use of bright colours with dull dirty colours gave of the creepy feeling that i desired to create myself.

silent hill 3

there is a small section of the game were you are in a carnival and you have to fight an enemy.
they portray the carnival well, as it fitted in and didn't look out of place to the rest of the game environments
it matches the mood of the game well because the textures they used were all similar to one another.

cartoons

there are a couple cartoons which have got some aspects of architecture that i would like to make
for example the miazaki films have allot of colourful scenery combinations. unfortunately they make the environments look inviting in staid of scary.

Studio Ghibli, Gake no Ue no Ponyo, Fujimoto Wallpaper

the actual things

i collected photos of London in the 17th century and i also gathered photos of old and new circuses that were around
i noted the certain aspects that i like the most from both themes for example i liked the bright colours in the circus. but i also like the dull greys and browns in the old England streets i had seen. Circus Tents Royalty Free Stock Photo tent from  street from

street designing

first i have to design my street so i know what textures i would need. i already briefly knew some of the textures i would need. for example i need coble stone and brick.

i started sketching buildings starting from normal buildings and then adding in the circus aspects after.
i created a mood board showing a range of buildings and objects such as lights, chairs and signs
after this i started to draw up sketches of actual streets.
after some thought i revisited this and decided i wanted the 'old England' style to be more dominant
as the street seemed to inviting and not creepy enough
so i drew a new street in what i would like it too look like
its still colourful but now the 'old england' style i wanted is more noticed.

what textures are needed

after designing my street i had to start looking and the textures i would need.
so i refereed to all the research images and the sketches i had to make a list, i needed

  • coloured glass
  • wood
  • coloured metal
  • coble stone paving
  • stone
  • slime
  • slate

making textures

coble stone paving

i made the first part of the stone texture in a program called 'Paint tool sai' by  drawing the bricks myself. with no filters or affects. i could leave it like this but it doesn't look detailed enough and looks quite tacky

after playing around some more i ended up liking this one allot but i don't want the colour of my walls to be this colour and its also still to flat

after putting it back into my original program and adding in bits my self i have finally created a texture that i like. its the right colour and its not to flat. I'm happy with the finished look and will be using it for my street

wood

first i tried to create i smooth polished wood look by adding noise and then motion blurring it

i ended up with this. i like this texture as its nice and dark so it will fit into my streat but it seems to clean and smooth. also it doesnt quite look like wood as there are no knots in it
after playing around with affects a bit more i ended up with the texture below

this one is a bit more ruff and i think that this would be the better texture to use for signs and other wooden objects. i will have to change the colour to make it seem more interesting for my street as i wanted the buildings to be mainly dark but have some colourful parts to it. that can be easily done by adding 2 overlay layers of the colour i want it to be

cartoon style wall

i did some experimenting in what style the textures could be in. i tried to create a  cartoon like wall texture. i was happy with it and started adding parts to make it like i wanted my street to look like.
even though i like how the last one had turned out. it unfortunately cant be used as a texture as it wont tile well so it would end up making the street look amateur or cheep

water

i tried to create a water texture but in the cartoon style. i wanted the water to be see through so it looked a bit realistic so i created pebbles underneath. and then put the water over the top of it with a reduced opacity

urban street game extended

influences

before designing the monsters for the game i and a group of people called "dark corrupter"
i decided to research into various games that have the same type of feeling as our game. for the monster design  want them to portray the feeling of the game. so i intend them to look dark and creepy.

i have a couple of games in mind that have influenced my ideas for the monster design.
the first game that has the type of monsters that have influenced me is the recent game amnesia made in September 8th 2010
the way in witch the monsters look like they have been destroyed and decapitated gave of a mutated look. and i liked that about them.

another game that has inspired me was silent hill. i like how the monsters have metal incorporated into their design and they look human like. i like the way in which these monsters all look like they have come from hell

adding rust

i tried to recreate a rusted steal texture. what i did in order to achieve this was i created a noise and motion blurred it to make it look like brushed steal. once i did this i added a layer on top and coloured with a low opacity brush of the colour i wanted my rust to be after this i aded a noise to it and then motion blurred it to make it have the same look as the steal this made it look ok but it took away from the steal look. so in order to bring back the steal look i duplicated the steal layer and put it ontop then changed the layer to multiply
and ended up with the top picture.

i dont think that my version of rust was well created as. the bottom picture is an actual photo of rusted metal and well my creation is far from the actual thing. i think that if i were to take this texture further then i would have added allot more layers on top with different colours. i would also try different tools. or maybe take a photo and merge the two to make it look more ruff. like rusted metal would. as my version looks to smooth to be rusted

research

we were asked to gather some textures of our own. i had gathered some photos and these are examples of some of them. the bigger photos are the ones that i preferred out of them all

i liked this particular picture because it gave a marble stone affect.

i chose this picture as the cracks give of a cool look but it may not be a good texture as there's not much definition in what material it is

i also liked this picture because the texture would be quite handy. it gives of a denim look even though the actual material was nothing like denim

this picture stood out as i liked how it had the bumps of the metal but i also like the fact that it had the speckled texture. this made it more interesting then just being metal

this was the last one and my most favourite picture. the texture of the wool is interesting and haw its knitted makes it even more interesting because of the pattern made
